The World Food Platform Eastern Africa Region
The World Food Platform Eastern Africa is a regional initiative established to strengthen food systems in a region marked by both agricultural potential and recurring vulnerability. Eastern Africa plays a vital role in livestock, cereals, horticulture, and regional food trade, yet continues to face chronic challenges related to climate shocks, drought cycles, conflict, and population growth. Food systems in the region are highly dependent on rainfall, pastoral livelihoods, and cross-border trade. Recurrent droughts, floods, and displacement place constant pressure on food availability, nutrition, and rural incomes. At the same time, Eastern Africa is emerging as a hub for climate-smart agriculture, digital extension services, irrigation innovation, and inclusive market models. The World Food Platform Eastern Africa provides a coordinated platform to align these efforts.
The Platform connects governments, agribusinesses, cooperatives, humanitarian and development partners, research institutions, and investors. It focuses on resilience-building, productivity improvement, food security planning, nutrition outcomes, and strengthened logistics and trade corridors.
By linking regional realities with global expertise and partnerships, the World Food Platform Eastern Africa supports adaptive, resilient, and sustainable food systems that protect livelihoods, improve food access, and contribute to long-term stability and development across the region.
