The World Food Platform Southern Africa Region
The World Food Platform Southern Africa is a regional initiative designed to strengthen food systems across a region that combines strong agricultural capacity with high exposure to climate and economic risk. Southern Africa is a major producer of cereals, livestock, fruits, and agro-exports, yet continues to face food insecurity driven by droughts, water stress, inequality, and supply-chain disruptions. Food systems in the region are shaped by climate variability, dependence on rain-fed agriculture, and uneven access to land, inputs, and markets. Periodic droughts, rising input costs, and infrastructure constraints affect both smallholder and commercial producers. At the same time, Southern Africa has advanced research institutions, commercial farming expertise, and growing investment in climate-resilient crops, irrigation, and agro-processing. The World Food Platform Southern Africa provides a structured space to align these strengths.
The Platform brings together governments, agribusinesses, farmer organizations, research bodies, development partners, and investors. It supports collaboration across productivity, food security, water management, value-chain development, trade, and sustainability.
By connecting regional capabilities with global knowledge and partnerships, the World Food Platform Southern Africa supports resilient, inclusive, and future-ready food systems that strengthen livelihoods, regional stability, and long-term food security.
